Born First Born Free is a year-long conversation between brothers Daniel Malan and Hayden Malan that takes place across two continents.
When Hayden moved to Daegu, South Korea, at the beginning of 2018 to teach English in a public elementary school Daniel remained living in Cape Town. The brothers set up a shared instagram account as a way for them to stay in contact and share observations and experiences with one another. They took alternating turns to post an image, each of which was a visual or symbolic response to the previous one - a game of cross-continental broken telephone had begun. Over the year a steady flow of photographic and cultural themes, similarities and differences emerged from the constant overlay of images. The final result is this book.
